    We are used to dividing clothes, colours, jewellery, and even gestures into “male” and/or “female”.

    Yet objects have no gender — but every object has its own history.

    “The Gender Paradox” is a social study at the intersection of art history and the history of everyday objects.

    We will explore how patriarchy, culture, and social status have assigned gender to objects throughout history. By examining the history of familiar things, we can trace their connection to contemporary ideas of “femininity” and “masculinity”.

    Where does the history of an object end and a socially constructed stereotype begin?

    Who decided that pink is for girls?
    Why did men stop (?) wearing heels?
    When did makeup come to be considered predominantly feminine?
    And how do ordinary objects acquire gender in the first place?
