    Information

The lecture is dedicated to the pagan festivals celebrated on the island of Cyprus thousands of years ago. We will also discuss the ancient Cypriot calendar: how they measured time and kept track of days, months, and years.

We will learn about the Mediterranean pagan gods and heroes who died and resurrected. We’ll explore which mythological figures died on Cyprus and how they were brought back to life.

We will examine how pagan festivals influenced the formation of Christmas traditions and why these celebrations were always held in December.

As a Christmas gift, we will read an inscription from the ancient Cypriot calendar. We’ll discover that some months on Cyprus have been preserved since the time of the Trojan War, while others (including the most important month) were created by the Cypriots themselves.

Finally, we will test our knowledge of the names of months in modern Greek and Cypriot.

Lecturer: Archaeologist and historian Anton Kostichev
