    Information

Russian military analyst and political scientist Alexander Sharavin, a participant in the events of September–October 1993, will give an open lecture on the nature of historical myths and their impact on contemporary perceptions of the past.

History is not only a set of facts, but also the narratives that shape public consciousness. Why do some events become wrapped in legends, others are silenced, and still others turn into instruments of political struggle? During the lecture, we will explore how myths are created, what role they play in society, and whether they can be beneficial.

    Programme:

    • What is a myth: from antiquity to modern narratives
    • Main types of myths and the mechanisms of their formation
    • Historical myths: benefits, harm, and social functions
    • The most widespread myths about Russian history
    • October 1993 as an example of contemporary myth-making and the battle for interpretation

The lecture will also feature the presentation of the author’s new book, offering an in-depth study of the events of October 1993.
