    Information

The word "harem" is enveloped in mystery, much like the imaginary East created by European romantics.

Fueled by myths and misinterpreted facts, Europeans invented their own vision of the harem—a place of idleness and debauchery. Compared to sultans, Don Juan was merely a poor adventurer, wandering at night with a guitar slung over his back, while the sultan "plucked the purest lilies, the most flawless roses in the garden of beauty."

Russian landlords also established their own seraglios, styled after the Turkish model.

Many tourists visiting Istanbul today rush to the Topkapi Harem to see the setting of the TV series Magnificent Century.

Orientalism and the imagined East continue to live on in popular culture.

In the lecture, we will discuss the real lives of the palace's female residents—their customs, daily routines, fates, and influence on the empire.

Lecturer: Elena Panisheva - cultural historian, literary scholar, and exhibition curator at the Moscow State Literature Museum.
