    Information

In this lecture, we will explore the Phoenician period in Cyprus, focusing on the cults on the island and the remnants of ancient Phoenician structures, particularly in the urban area of Larnaca.

We will discuss the worship of the goddess Ishtar and discover that Cyprus had its own Carthage, traces of which we will seek between Larnaca and Limassol.

Join us for a virtual journey through the capital of Phoenician Cyprus, Kition (modern Larnaca). We will explore a Semitic temple complex and visit a significant and well-developed port.

As a bonus, we will read Phoenician inscriptions from the Larnaca temple of Ishtar and uncover the Cypriot dialect of the Phoenician language. We will also look at ancient Hebrew texts from the Bible and find the Phoenician city walls that lie unnoticed among the modern urban landscape in the heart of Larnaca (see photo).
