We invite you to a talk dedicated to the mysterious and inspiring world of women in ancient Cyprus. Together, we will travel through millennia and trace how the role of women evolved — from the sacred image of the goddess to an integral part of everyday life in Cypriot society.

We will talk about the harsh and demanding lives of women in the Stone Age: how they survived, managed households, and raised children while men worked in the fields or went hunting.

We will explore the Bronze Age and try to answer key questions: Was there a true matriarchal system on Cyprus? Did queens exist? Did women hold real power, or was Cypriot society relatively egalitarian for both genders?

We will also examine how women’s lives changed with the arrival of new peoples, including the first Greek Cypriots, and why women’s rights and social roles became more restricted over time.

Finally, we will turn to religious cults and mythological images in which women played a central role — from the goddess of love to the guardian of life itself.

This lecture is about women who were not merely part of history, but its bearers and creators.
